Tonight, the House Ways & Means Committee released draft legislative text for its portion of the Republicans’ sweeping spending plan to fund a multi-trillion-dollar tax giveaway for billionaires and big corporations. The bill text, as released, leaves clean energy tax credits untouched—for now. In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“Leaving clean energy credits untouched in their initial bill text isn’t a signal of support—it’s a sign of deep division. Many Republicans know just how politically toxic it would be to slash the investments that are lowering energy bills, creating jobs, and reviving American manufacturing in their own districts. Behind closed doors, they’re scrambling to figure out just how far they can go without sabotaging themselves in the next election.
“But make no mistake: This whole endeavor is about taking from working-class Americans to fund tax cuts for billionaires. Despite Donald Trump’s promise to cut energy prices in half, electricity costs are now ‘tracking toward unseen heights’ driven in part by his own executive actions that are making it more expensive to keep the lights on. Republican leaders have made it clear that they’re eyeing clean energy as one of the first things to cut to fund their giveaways. If they move forward with any plan that guts these investments, they’ll be choosing to raise household energy costs even further, kill jobs, and undermine American energy security, just to hand another windfall to their Big Oil donors.”
