Evergreen: The Homes Act Offers Transformative Path Toward Cutting Climate Pollution, Tackling Housing Shortage

Following Senator Tina Smith’s (D-MN) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY-14) introduction of the Homes Act of 2024, Evergreen Action Buildings Senior Policy Lead Tony Sirna released the following statement:

“The Homes Act of 2024 is a bold step forward in addressing twin crises plaguing our nation: skyrocketing housing costs and a climate crisis endangering our health and costing us billions annually. Every day, the extreme financial burdens imposed by out-of-control housing costs force working families to make unacceptable choices between paying rent and forgoing everyday needs like food and health care. At the same time, dirty and inefficient buildings harm our health and fuel the climate crisis.

“This bill directly addresses both by investing in millions of permanently affordable, zero-emission homes. The Homes Act offers a transformative path toward cutting climate pollution, building safe, resilient homes, and lowering costs for families, all while tackling our nation’s housing shortage. This is the kind of comprehensive action we need to secure a sustainable and livable future for all.”

Last year, Evergreen published a memo delving into the relationship between air and housing quality and developing a framework for how our homes can help us build toward a safer climate for healthier communities. You can read more here.
